What if your food behaviors were never the problem, but the most intelligent thing your body could do in a moment that felt unsafe?

In this episode of the Self Led Woman Podcast, Megan sits down with Stephanie Mara Fox — somatic nutritional counsellor, creator of Somatic Eating, and PhD candidate in somatic psychology — for one of the richest, most reframing conversations this podcast has ever had.

What somatic eating actually is

Most therapeutic approaches work top-down. They start with the mind — the thoughts, the patterns, the beliefs — and try to work their way down to the body.

Somatics flips that entirely.

Somatic eating starts with the body. The nervous system. The felt sense. The physical sensations that show up before the thought even forms. And when we address how we feel at that level, it sends a completely different message up to the brain.

Because the brain and the body are in constant conversation through the vagus nerve — what Stephanie describes as the highway of communication in the body. And sometimes the fastest way to change what we think is to change what we feel first.

Food as a substitute for secure attachment

One of the most profound reframes in this conversation is Stephanie's take on hyperpalatable and processed foods.

We give them such a bad name. But have you ever noticed how they taste exactly the same every single time?

There is something about that consistency that mimics a securely attached parent. Reliable. Predictable. Always the same experience when you return to them. And if that kind of consistency wasn't available in your early relationships — your body went looking for a substitute.

That is not weakness. That is intelligence.

Why Stephanie no longer uses the term eating disorder

What you were doing with food was the most adaptive, wisest thing your body could do in a time it felt unsafe, unseen, unheard, and dysregulated.

That is not a disorder. That is an adaptation.

And you cannot heal something you have been taught to be ashamed of.

What restriction actually does to the nervous system

Reactance theory — developed in the 1950s — explains why the moment you decide you cannot have something, your body perceives a famine and goes after it harder.

It does not have to make logical sense. As soon as your freedom to choose feels threatened, your nervous system responds. This is why restriction so often leads to the very behavior you were trying to stop. It is not a character flaw. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do.

What happens when you stop fighting your emotions

We have this idea that if we let ourselves feel fear or grief or anger, it will be endless. That if we open the door even a little, we will drown in it.

But what Stephanie sees consistently in her sessions is the opposite.

When we say to fear, I see you, you're welcome here, the intensity immediately decreases. Your emotions don't need to be contained in a tight corner of your body. They need a bigger container. And you are big enough to hold them.
