Episode 35: Why Emotional Eating Isn't a Willpower Problem - An Open Letter to Women Who Are Ready to Hear the Truth

This episode is different.

There are no guests, no frameworks, no listicles. Just me, speaking directly to every woman who has been fighting herself around food for years — and is tired of being told the answer is more discipline.

Because it isn't. It never was.

You've been trying to solve the wrong problem

If you've spent years starting over — new plan, new Monday, new version of the same hope that this time will be different — and it keeps not working, there is a reason.

And the reason is not you.

It's that every approach you've tried has been aimed at the behaviour. The eating, the restriction, the rules. As if changing what you put in your mouth is the thing that needs to happen.

But emotional eating is a disconnection problem. It's what happens when, usually early in life, something teaches you that certain feelings aren't safe to have. That your emotions are too much, or not acceptable, or need to be managed quietly rather than felt and expressed and met.

And food becomes the solution. Loyal, available, reliable. There when nothing else is.

That's not weakness. That's an adaptation. And it makes complete sense.

What this is actually costing you

Your emotional eating is not a failure. But I also know it is costing you.

The dinner out where you're only half present because the other half of you is in your head. The holiday where you spend two weeks quietly at war with yourself while pretending to everyone around you that you're having a wonderful time. The morning in front of the mirror, negotiating with yourself before you can feel acceptable enough to leave the house.

It is costing you the version of your life where you're actually in it. Fully. With presence and pleasure and without the constant background noise.

And you deserve to get that back.

What's on the other side

In this episode I talk about what actually becomes possible when women heal this at the root.

Not a perfect relationship with food or the permanent absence of hard days. But a life you can actually inhabit. Ordering what sounds delicious and being completely present in that evening. Going on holiday and trying everything and coming home reminiscing about how beautiful it was. Getting dressed in the morning and leaving the house. That's it. Just leaving — without the negotiation, without the commentary, without the exhausting performance of trying to feel acceptable enough to be seen.

That is not a fantasy. That is what becomes possible when you heal what is actually driving this.

I was you for 30 years

I started dieting when I was around eight years old. I was on the merry-go-round for three decades. I know every inch of it — how convincing it is, how it keeps promising that the next plan will be the one that finally changes things.

And I also know what it's like to step off it. To do the real work. To find something so much better on the other side.

That is available to you too.

You are not too far gone

Wherever you are, however long you've been at this — you have not missed your chance.

But you will not find your way off the merry-go-round through a better diet. You will find your way off it by finally being willing to hear what is underneath. The feelings, the parts, the old stories the food has been managing all this time.

That's the work. And it is absolutely possible.
